Senior Men’s Cricket
North Balwyn Cricket Club proudly fields a strong and inclusive senior men’s program that spans from the elite 1st XI competing in the Dunstan Shield, through to multiple Saturday turf grades and a range of Sunday Turf sides. This structure provides opportunities for cricketers of all abilities — from high-performance athletes seeking top-level competition to social players enjoying the camaraderie and spirit of club cricket. Each team plays an important role in the broader club pathway, ensuring that players can develop, compete, and contribute to the club’s success at every level.
1st XI – Dunstan Shield (Saturday on Turf Pitches)
The North Balwyn 1st XI competes in the prestigious Dunstan Shield, the highest level of competition within the Eastern Cricket Association. As the club’s flagship team, the 1st XI sets the standard for professionalism, performance, and club culture. Players at this level are among the best in the competition — a blend of seasoned leaders, talented recruits, and rising stars. The side trains with intensity and purpose, focusing on tactical awareness, discipline, and consistency. Every season, the goal remains clear: to contend for the Dunstan Shield title while continuing to develop players capable of representing the club and the association at higher levels.
2nd XI (Saturday on Turf Pitches)
The 2nd XI is a highly competitive and ambitious unit that acts as the immediate feeder team to the 1st XI. Consisting of a mix of experienced senior players and emerging talent, this side consistently strives for finals contention and strong performances across the season. Training standards are high, with a clear focus on refining technical skills and match awareness. The 2nd XI provides players with the perfect platform to push for senior selection while contributing meaningfully to the club’s on-field success.
3rd XI (Saturday on Synthetic Pitches)
The 3rd XI maintains a strong competitive edge while playing a vital role in bridging the gap between high-performance and developing cricket. The team blends younger players establishing themselves in senior cricket with experienced cricketers who provide leadership and mentorship. Matches are played in a spirited but disciplined manner, with an emphasis on skill development, teamwork, and consistency. The 3rd XI often features players returning from higher grades or juniors stepping up to senior level, making it an essential part of the club’s player development framework.
4th XI (Saturday on Synthetic Pitches)
The 4th and 5th XIs provide an excellent balance of competition, development, and enjoyment. These teams cater for a wide range of players — from those building their skills and confidence to experienced members balancing cricket with other commitments. While the competitive spirit remains strong, there is also an emphasis on inclusion, player growth, and maintaining a positive environment both on and off the field. Training is flexible, allowing players to enjoy their cricket while still striving for improvement and, when possible, higher-grade selection.
Sunday Turf Teams
North Balwyn’s Sunday Turf teams provide additional opportunities for players to gain experience on turf or simply enjoy a more relaxed style of cricket. NBCC currently fields two Sunday Turf teams in the Eastern Cricket Association & MCC Club XI competition. These sides attract a diverse mix — from young players eager for extra match time to veterans and social cricketers looking for an enjoyable weekend hit-out. While the competition level varies, the focus is always on participation, enjoyment, and fostering a strong club culture. Sunday cricket also serves as a valuable introduction to turf conditions for players aspiring to move up the senior ranks.
A Club for Every Cricketer
Across all senior men’s teams, North Balwyn Cricket Club promotes a clear pathway for progression, a culture of fairness in selection, and a shared commitment to continual improvement. Whether competing for a premiership in Dunstan Shield or enjoying a social match on a Sunday afternoon, every player contributes to the club’s proud tradition and community spirit. With a balance of competitiveness, inclusivity, and development, NBCC continues to provide a home for cricketers of all levels to grow and thrive.
